Checkers
English draughts, on an eight by eight board with twelve men a side. The rule that catches people out is the compulsory capture: if you can take, you must.
The rules
- The board is eight by eight and only the dark squares are used. Each player starts with twelve men on the three rows nearest them.
- A man moves one square diagonally forward to an empty square.
- A capture is made by jumping an adjacent enemy piece into the empty square directly beyond it. The jumped piece is removed.
- A capture is compulsory. If a capture is available anywhere on the board, you must play one.
- If the piece you have just jumped with can jump again, it must, and the whole chain counts as a single move.
- A man that finishes its move on the far row is crowned a king, and may move and jump backwards as well as forwards.
- You lose when you have no pieces left, or no legal move on your turn.
