Cribbage

The classic two-hander, and the one game where the arithmetic is the game. Here the server does the counting, so you can learn it without a scorepad.

The rules

  1. Each player is dealt six cards and lays two away into the crib. The crib belongs to the dealer and is counted as a second hand at the end.
  2. One card is cut and turned up. It counts towards both hands and the crib.
  3. Pegging: play cards in turn, each announcing the running total. Nobody may take the count past 31.
  4. Score two for making the total exactly 15 and two for 31. Score for a pair laid on a pair, and for a run of three or more made by the cards just played, whatever order they arrived in.
  5. When neither player can lay without passing 31, the last to have laid a card scores one for the go, and the count restarts.
  6. Then the hands are counted: every combination of cards adding to 15, every pair, every run, a flush of four in hand, and the jack of the turned suit.
  7. The dealer counts the crib after their own hand, and the deal alternates.
  8. First to 121 wins, and the game stops the moment somebody reaches it.

Cribbage is scored in points and in nothing else. There is no stake and nothing to win but the game.

Playing it here

  • Against a person or the bot. The bot needs no account and starts at once. To play a person, be rated and keep your games, you need an account: an email address and a password.
  • At your own pace. Every move has a deadline you both see, from five minutes to a week. A game can take an evening or it can take a fortnight.
  • Nothing to buy and nothing to win. No stakes, no prizes, no boosts, no undo. The only thing on offer is a place on a leaderboard, and only if you want one.
  • Every game can be checked. Anything decided by chance comes from the game's seed, and the seed is published the moment the game ends, so any finished game can be replayed and verified by anyone. See fair play.
