Hangman

Not the version where one player thinks of a word. Here you both get the same word, your own six lives, and whoever gets there first takes the round.

The rules

  1. Both players are given the same word, with its length and its category shown and its letters hidden.
  2. Guess a letter. If the word contains it, every copy of it is revealed. If not, you lose one of your six lives.
  3. Your lives are your own. A wrong guess costs you nothing on your opponent's gallows.
  4. You may attempt the whole word at any time instead of guessing a letter.
  5. Six wrong letters and you are out of that word. The round continues while your opponent still has lives.
  6. A match is three words. Winning a word scores a point, both solving on the same turn scores half each, and both failing scores nothing for anybody.

The three words come from the game's seed, so they were decided before anyone was asked, and the seed is published at the end so you can check.

Playing it here

  • Against a person or the bot. The bot needs no account and starts at once. To play a person, be rated and keep your games, you need an account: an email address and a password.
  • At your own pace. Every move has a deadline you both see, from five minutes to a week. A game can take an evening or it can take a fortnight.
  • Nothing to buy and nothing to win. No stakes, no prizes, no boosts, no undo. The only thing on offer is a place on a leaderboard, and only if you want one.
  • Every game can be checked. Anything decided by chance comes from the game's seed, and the seed is published the moment the game ends, so any finished game can be replayed and verified by anyone. See fair play.
