Ludo

A race for two to four players, with just enough spite in it to keep everybody interested. Ludo has no single agreed rule book, so the set this site plays is written out below.

The rules

  1. Each player has four tokens, which start in their yard.
  2. A six is needed to bring a token out of the yard onto the board.
  3. Rolling a six earns another roll. Three sixes in a row forfeits the turn.
  4. Landing on a square holding a single opposing token sends that token back to its yard, to start again.
  5. Each colour's entry square is safe: nothing can be sent home from it.
  6. Two tokens of the same colour hold a square against anything landing on it, but do not stop other tokens passing over.
  7. A token needs the exact roll to reach home. Overshooting is not allowed, so a token close to home may have to wait.
  8. The first player to get all four tokens home wins.

Ludo has no canonical rules and the versions people grew up with genuinely differ. The list above is the one this site implements, published so there is nothing to argue about mid-game.

Playing it here

  • Against a person or the bot. The bot needs no account and starts at once. To play a person, be rated and keep your games, you need an account: an email address and a password.
  • At your own pace. Every move has a deadline you both see, from five minutes to a week. A game can take an evening or it can take a fortnight.
  • Nothing to buy and nothing to win. No stakes, no prizes, no boosts, no undo. The only thing on offer is a place on a leaderboard, and only if you want one.
  • Every game can be checked. Anything decided by chance comes from the game's seed, and the seed is published the moment the game ends, so any finished game can be replayed and verified by anyone. See fair play.
